UK Visas and Immigration Update

Are you planning to study in the UK?

UKVI may want to speak to you before making a decision on your visa.

Some students are receiving invitations to attend UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) interviews as part of their Student visa application process. If you receive one, don’t panic, but don’t take it lightly either. Your interview is an opportunity to explain your study plans, your choice of university, and how your course fits into your future goals.

Below are some pointers to help you prepare.

Know Your Course Before attending your student visa or university credibility interview, make sure you understand the course you intend to study. You should be able to explain what the course covers, the key modules you will take, and why it interests you. For example, if you are applying for an MSc in Data Science, you should understand the skills you expect to gain and how the programme relates to your academic background or interests. This shows that you have researched your course and are making an informed decision about your education. The better you understand your course, the more confidently you can explain why you have chosen it.

Understand Your University Choice You should be able to explain why you selected your university and what makes it a suitable choice for your studies. Assuming you might be attracted to a university because of its course structure, specialist facilities, practical learning opportunities, research strengths, or industry links, simply saying that the university has a good reputation may not be enough to explain your decision. Research the specific features that influenced your choice and explain how they meet your academic needs. A clear explanation demonstrates that your university choice is based on research and personal academic goals, rather than guesswork.

Understand Your Finances Be clear about how your tuition fees and living expenses will be paid throughout your studies. You should understand the amount you need, the funds already available, and who will support you financially, if applicable. For instance, if your parents are sponsoring your education, be prepared to explain their role in funding your studies and how the money will be provided. If you are using personal savings or a scholarship, understand how these funds will cover your expenses. Your answers should be consistent with your actual financial arrangements and any documents submitted with your application. Understanding your finances helps you explain how you intend to support yourself while studying without relying on uncertain funding arrangements.

Know Your Future Plans You should be able to explain how your chosen course connects to your career plans after graduation. Think about the knowledge and skills you expect to gain and how you intend to use them in your professional life. For example, if you are studying for a Master’s in Public Health, you might explain how the programme will prepare you for a career in health programme management or public health research. Your plans should be realistic and connected to your academic background and professional interests. You do not need to predict every detail of your future, but you should have a clear direction. Being able to connect your course to your future plans helps demonstrate that you have a clear purpose for pursuing the qualification.

Be Honest and Confident Answer interview questions truthfully and in your own words. You do not need to sound overly formal or use complicated language to give a good answer. Let’s assume an interviewer asks why you chose a particular course. It’s better to explain your genuine reasons instead of repeating a response you memorised from an online sample. Memorised answers can make it difficult to respond naturally when a follow-up question is asked. Take a moment to understand each question, organise your thoughts, and answer directly. Honest, clear, and natural responses help you communicate your intentions more effectively and avoid inconsistencies in your answers.

Follow the Interview Instructions Pay close attention to all communication about your interview and follow the instructions provided. Check your email regularly, including your spam or junk folder, for information about the interview date, time, format, and any documents or identification you may need. For example, if your interview is scheduled online, test your internet connection, camera, and microphone beforehand, and make sure you know how to access the meeting. If it is an in-person interview, confirm the location and plan your journey in advance. Following the instructions helps you avoid preventable mistakes and ensures that you are prepared to attend your interview as required.

All of these may look daunting. You don’t have to prepare alone. We provide interview preparation to help students get ready for their UKVI interviews. We help you understand what to expect, organise your thoughts, and practise explaining your study plans clearly and confidently.

And remember that receiving an interview invitation does not automatically mean your visa will be refused. However, how you respond to the questions is very important.

Don’t wait until your interview date is approaching to start preparing. Start now.
