STUDY ABROAD
↓Malta
Study in an English-speaking Mediterranean destination with a rich cultural heritage, a range of academic and career-focused programmes, and a welcoming international community.
Why Study in Malta?
Malta combines a Mediterranean setting with English-language study options and a diverse mix of academic and career-focused programmes. Its compact size, historic towns, and international community make it a distinctive place to pursue higher education.
People and Language
Malta’s official languages are Maltese and English, and English is widely used in education and everyday life. This can make communication easier for international students, while learning a few Maltese phrases can help you connect with local communities and culture.
The islands have a long history shaped by different cultures and are home to students and residents from many countries. As with any destination, your experience will vary by institution, programme, and community.
Weather
Malta has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and generally mild, wetter winters. Spring and autumn often bring comfortable conditions for exploring the islands, while summer heat can be strong.
Students should plan for warm weather and sun protection, and bring layers and rain protection for the cooler, wetter months. Conditions can vary, so check a current forecast when planning travel or day-to-day activities.
Quality of Life
Malta is a small island country in the central Mediterranean. Its compact geography makes it possible to experience historic towns, coastal areas, and cultural events within a relatively short distance, although travel times depend on where you live and study.
Students can choose from a range of settings, including the main island and Gozo. Before selecting a programme, compare the campus location, accommodation options, transport, course costs, and the support services offered by each institution.
Higher Education Institutions and Programmes
Malta offers university degrees as well as vocational, technical, and industry-focused programmes. The University of Malta offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with English as its language of instruction. The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) offers programmes across multiple study areas, while the Institute of Tourism Studies focuses on tourism and hospitality education.
Entry requirements, programme availability, teaching language, fees, application dates, and recognition can differ by course and institution. Check that your chosen institution and qualification meet your goals and the relevant recognition requirements before applying.
Post-Study Work Opportunities
Post-study options depend on your course, immigration status, and the rules in force when you graduate. Identità states that eligible non-EU students who successfully complete qualifying studies in Malta may apply for a non-renewable residence authorisation of up to nine months to seek employment or establish a business related to their studies. This is a job-search period and does not by itself grant permission to work; check the latest conditions directly with Identità before making plans.
Some international students may be able to work part-time during their studies, subject to their course, residence status, and work authorisation. The conditions can change, so review the current Identità student employment rules and confirm your own eligibility before accepting work.
